Change Your Child’s Attitude In One Minute
There are several ways to go about changing your kid’s attitude. I would like to talk about just one way and that way is: take control as the parent.
Yes, it does sound really simple but let me tell you that not all parents do this. As parents we need to give specific directions instead of requesting things. Our kids should know without a doubt that we are the boss. You don’t need to let them know this in a rude way. Be gentle yet firm in your dealings with them.
Once you sound like you are in control you are definitely on your way to being in control once again. And kids need to know that their parents are in charge. What’s more, if you don’t show the child that you are in charge the kids will often assume leadership for themselves by default, and you don’t want that to happen.
When a child doesn’t do what is requested of them, you need to get straight to the point with them by simply saying to them, “what are you supposed to be doing?” followed pretty quickly by the words, “do it”. This ensures that the child knows exactly what they should be doing. Then there can be no excuses.
It can be horrible when a child tries to engage in a power struggle about what they should or shouldn’t be doing. But there is a secret in all of this. When you tell them what they should be doing, then you should turn and walk away to disengage with them. You don’t want to give them the opportunity to talk back to you.
If there is no-one there to argue with, chances are there will be no argument. And don’t ever ask your child for an explanation as to why they haven’t done something they should have done. This actually trains our kids to give us excuses for things and we don’t want them to get used to giving excuses. If you don’t ask your child for an excuse it is not likely they they will try to give you one.
This is just one very effective way to turn around your child’s attitude in a short amount of time. And remember, the change must always start with the parent first.
